Greenworks Optimow 15 Robotic Lawn Mower

Greenworks Optimow 15 robotic lawn mower in green and black

A Bluetooth® robot mower only talks to your phone when you are standing nearby. The Greenworks Optimow 15 works differently. Greenworks South Africa says it comes with a 4G SIM and full app security and control wherever in the world you are, so you can check on it and change its schedule from the office or from holiday.

It is a 24 V boundary-wire mower rated for lawns of up to 1 500 m², with a 35% slope rating and IPX5 water protection. It suits larger, open lawns where you want remote access without moving to a GPS-guided system.

What makes the Optimow 15 different

Remote control through its own SIM

The SIM card is pre-installed. Through the Greenworks app you can monitor the mower, change settings and adjust schedules without being anywhere near it. Greenworks also uses that connection to update the mower. If you travel or work long hours, this is the feature that sets it apart from a Bluetooth® model.

Little and often

The Optimow 15 mows in a random pattern and takes only a small amount off each time. Greenworks says the fine clippings fall to the roots and break down naturally, so the clippings do not need collecting and the lawn ends up with an even, carpet-like finish.

Rain, frost and collision sensors

Rain and frost sensors keep it mowing only in suitable conditions. Collision sensors make it stop and turn when it touches an obstacle, and the lift sensor stops the blades when it is picked up. A geofence system sends you a notification if the mower ever leaves its area.

Finds its way home

When the battery runs low, it heads back to its base station to recharge, then carries on. On complicated lawns, an optional guide wire helps it get back to the station.

Is it right for your lawn?

Size it with headroom. Greenworks rates the Optimow 15 for up to 1 500 m², and as with any robotic mower, you want that figure comfortably above the size of your lawn. Greenworks does not publish how many hours a day it needs to cover the full area, so we size it on our assessment of your lawn rather than on the headline figure.

Slopes of up to 35% are within its range, and it needs at least 60 cm to get through a passage. Because the remote features run through the SIM, it is worth checking mobile reception in your garden before you buy.

If you are weighing it up against a Gardena, the Gardena SILENO life 1500 has the same 1 500 m² rating, a display on the mower and Bluetooth® app control within about 10 metres, but no SIM for remote access. To see both alongside the Husqvarna Automower® range, compare all our robotic mowers.

Frequently asked questions

Can I control the Greenworks Optimow 15 from my phone when I am away from home?

Yes. Greenworks South Africa says the Optimow 15 includes a 4G SIM, with app security and control wherever you are. Greenworks describes the app as letting you monitor the mower and change settings and schedules remotely.

Does the Optimow 15 need a boundary wire?

Yes. It mows inside a boundary wire laid around the edge of the lawn, and Greenworks includes boundary wire in the box. For complex layouts, Greenworks offers an optional guide wire to help the mower find its way back to the charging station.

How steep a lawn can the Optimow 15 handle?

Greenworks South Africa rates it for slopes of up to 35%, which it gives as 20 degrees.

Why does the Optimow 15 mow in a random pattern?

Greenworks explains that it does not need to track where it has been. By mowing often in a random pattern and taking only a little off each time, it covers the whole lawn evenly, and the fine clippings fall back into the grass.

What happens if the Optimow 15 is lifted or leaves the lawn?

A lift sensor stops the blades when the mower is picked up. Greenworks also lists a geofence system that sends a notification if the mower leaves its designated area.

How long does the Optimow 15 mow on one charge?

Greenworks South Africa gives a cutting time of 70 minutes and a charging time of 70 minutes. When the battery runs low, it returns to its base station to recharge.
